The Fibre

Golden by nature

Muga is reared only in Assam, its thread a natural gold no dye can match. From silkworm to spun yarn takes nearly two months — a slow, living process protected by a GI tag since 2006.

◆ Antheraea assamensis · Assam only
The Loom

The fly-shuttle handloom

Each saree begins as a naksha — a blueprint of the pattern — translated thread by thread on an age-old fly-shuttle loom. One Golden Dawn saree takes 7 to 10 days of unbroken weaving.

◆ 7–10 days per saree
The Hand

Woven by Meena Hazarika

This saree was woven by Meena Hazarika of Sualkuchi, a master weaver of 42 years. Like most of Assam's weavers, she works at a loom set in her own home — the craft passed from mother to daughter.

Every motif is a word

The weaves of Assam carry a language older than writing. Tap a point on the pallu to read what the weaver said in thread.

Kingkhap
The temple-and-dragon emblem, the most regal of Muga motifs, traditionally reserved for ceremonial and bridal wear.

Care Instructions
Dry-clean only for the first few washes; thereafter gentle cold hand-wash with a mild detergent. Never wring or starch. Dry in shade and store wrapped in soft muslin. Muga grows more lustrous with age and careful washing — it is meant to be worn for a lifetime.
The Handmade Promise
This saree is entirely handwoven, so slight irregularities in the weave, tiny slubs, and small variations in the golden tone are natural — they are the signature of a human hand at the loom, not flaws. No two Muga sarees are ever identical.
Drape & Styling
Lightweight and fluid, Muga drapes easily in any style. In Assam it is worn as a two-piece Mekhela Chador for weddings and Bihu. Pair with traditional gold joon-biri and gam-kharu jewellery for ceremonial occasions, or a simple blouse for understated festive wear.
